Philosophy, Design, and Perception

I combine philosophical research, visual communication, and technical understanding to examine complex questions and present them clearly.

I am an independent philosopher, author, and designer based in Bern. My work focuses on time and reality, perception and cognition, and the design of digital and printed information. I do not treat these as isolated activities. Philosophy helps me examine concepts and assumptions. Science provides models and empirical findings. Design makes structures visible and gives people an accessible way into complex subjects. Photography and time spent in the mountains complement this work through direct observation of landscape, light, change, and spatial perspective.

Time and Reality

Existential Realism examines the distinction between present existence and the broader domain of reality.

A central focus of my philosophical work is the question of what it means to exist in time. Existential Realism begins with a simple distinction: only the present exists, yet reality extends beyond what presently exists. The past is real as what actually happened. The future is real as an open field of grounded possibilities. This starting point offers a new framework for questions concerning change, causation, memory, probability, and modern physics. I do not present ER as a replacement for scientific theories, but as a philosophical framework for examining their ontological assumptions and implications.

Visual Perception and Cognition

Perception is not a passive copy of the world, but a continuously tested construction.

I am interested in how the brain develops an action-guiding model of the world from sensory signals, memories, expectations, and learned concepts. The brain does not simply wait for complete information. It organizes perception, fills in missing details, and predicts what is likely to occur. New sensory signals then confirm or correct these models. Constructed does not mean freely invented. Perception is constrained by an independent reality and must prove sufficiently reliable through action. These insights also matter for design and human-computer interaction. Effective design takes account of how people process information, distribute attention, recognize relationships, and make decisions.

Design Between Strategy and Execution

I develop visual systems, digital products, and publications that organize information and make it accessible.

I have worked in visual communication, web design, and digital media for more than twenty years. My experience ranges from corporate design and UI/UX to publications, campaigns, and the technical implementation of websites. I combine conceptual work with practical production. I develop structures, user journeys, and visual systems and support projects from initial analysis through to publication. For me, good design is not the decorative packaging of content. It should improve understanding, provide orientation, and give each subject an appropriate visual form.

Skills

I specialize in web design and UI/UX creation, developing intuitive user interfaces and interaction processes for websites and apps.

From the creation of initial wireframes to fully developed visual prototypes, I transform ideas into thoughtful and appealing designs. In addition to the conceptualization and planning of digital projects, I also design logos, illustrations, and high-quality print materials – always with a clear focus on aesthetics and functionality.

My work is built on a deep understanding of the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Adobe XD, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, complemented by the use of Affinity tools and Topaz plugins for precise, detail-oriented finishing.

I work as a photographer and videographer with a comprehensive understanding of the entire creative process – from capturing and editing to the final presentation. My photography includes both professional photoshoots and detailed post-processing and color correction. In video, I create engaging film projects through editing, effects, and precise storytelling. I also create high-quality 3D visualizations and animations that stand out through technical precision and artistic design. I use tools such as Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Camera Raw, as well as Blender 3D and Expressive Animator for interactive animations.

I specialize in front-end and web development with a clear focus on creating user-friendly and efficient web solutions. With solid knowledge of HTML, CSS, and modern preprocessors like SASS and LESS, I translate complex layouts and designs precisely.
In the back-end, I work with Python and Django to develop robust and scalable applications, complemented by database management using SQLite and MariaDB.
I use tools like Git for version control, Bootstrap for responsive design, and Wagtail CMS or WordPress for easy content management. JavaScript and jQuery also support me in building dynamic and interactive web elements.

I have foundational knowledge in digital marketing, with a focus on effective search engine optimization (SEO) and keyword analysis to increase the visibility and reach of online content. I use tools like Microsoft Clarity and Google Analytics to perform data-driven analysis and develop strategies for optimized performance.
Additionally, I support social media strategies and work on targeted one-page optimization to improve user experience and conversion rates. I also integrate AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Claude to automate processes and incorporate innovative approaches into digital marketing strategies.

I have extensive experience in managing projects and teams, focusing on strategic planning, analysis, and effective implementation. As a team leader, I have managed and supported up to six design staff, while also coordinating external contributors for WordPress, Wagtail, and TYPO3 web projects. My competencies include project planning, proposal development, crisis management, and leading interdisciplinary teams. I place great importance on clear communication and efficient collaboration – both with clients and within the team. For project and task management, I use tools like Microsoft Planner, Microsoft To Do, Gantt charts, Kanban methods, the Office 365 Suite, and Zoho Office to organize processes in a structured and goal-oriented way.

Outside of the Box

Interdisciplinary thinking and unconventional ideas are valuable when they lead to more precise questions and better solutions.

I often work between established fields. The aim is not to reject convention merely for the sake of novelty. A different perspective matters when it describes a problem more clearly or produces a more robust solution. Philosophical analysis helps identify hidden assumptions. Design makes complex structures visible. Technical understanding determines which ideas can be implemented in practice. This combination shapes both my philosophical research and my design work.

Fundamental Questions

For me, philosophy is a method for examining the actual structures of the world more carefully.

My work addresses questions about existence, reality, time, perception, consciousness, and human action. I am not interested only in constructing possible systems of thought. A theory gains value when it explains something about the actual world, removes conceptual confusion, or places existing knowledge within a clearer framework. I therefore look for connections between philosophical analysis and scientific research while respecting the different roles of each.

Nights in the Mountains

Sleeping in the mountains combines landscape photography with direct observation of light, weather, and time.

I regularly spend nights on summits and in remote locations in the Alps. This allows me to observe the transition from day to night and back again without interruption. These stays create photographic opportunities that are difficult to reproduce under ordinary conditions: late light, star-filled skies, changing weather, and the first transformations of morning. For me, sleeping in the mountains is a physical challenge, a photographic practice, and a deliberate interruption of daily routines. It provides time for concentrated observation without requiring a mystical interpretation.

Introspection & Meditation

Introspection allows closer observation of attention, perception, and thought.

Meditation and deliberate self-observation have been part of my personal and philosophical practice for many years. My aim is not to eliminate thought entirely or maintain a special mental state. I examine how attention is directed, how thoughts arise, and how the quality of present experience can change. This practice supports concentration, self-regulation, and the examination of personal reactions. It complements philosophical and scientific inquiry with a disciplined first-person perspective without treating subjective experience as equivalent to objective knowledge.

Health

Movement, nutrition, and recovery provide the physical foundation for sustained concentration and long-term well-being.

Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and occasional fasting are part of my daily life. I do not regard them as a programme of constant self-optimization, but as practical habits that support physical health and sustained intellectual work. My routine includes endurance exercise, strength training, and long hikes, together with sufficient recovery. The goal is not a perfect system, but a balance that remains sustainable over time.
